Why Fiber Is More Important Than What You Think

You've heard the word Fiber thrown around here and there, but do you really know how important Fiber is to your life? The average person's diet is filled with fast foods and sugary snacks with hardly any fiber to be found.  Even people that eat healthy have a hard time getting in their daily fiber intake requirement.  Fiber is a plant produced material that our bodies can't digest. But if our bodies can't digest it then why is it so important for us to have? In today's blog I'm going to go over why fiber is so important, and how you can incorporate more fiber into your diet starting today.

Women need about 25 grams per day and Men need about 38 grams of fiber per day. When you have your daily fiber intake you are getting many great benefits. There's two type of Fiber, Insoluble fiber and Soluble fiber. Insoluble Fiber dissolves in water and gives your food a heavy consistency.  This makes the absorption of sugar into your blood stream take longer which can aide with fat loss.  Soluble fiber absorbs water, but doesn’t dissolve it.  This increases the stool bulk and promotes the movement of waste through your digestive system. This type of fiber can benefit those who struggle with constipation or irregular stools. One of the more notable benefits that fiber gives is the ability to prevent certain diseases. Colon cancer has been on the rise recently and increasing your fiber intake can reduce your chances of getting it. when you eat Fiber it clears out the colon of unwanted waste and caked up fecal matter reducing your chance of colon cancer.Fiber has also been shown to lower high cholesterol levels.

If you look at the back of a food product and the nutritional facts label says for example, 30 grams of carbohydrates and 25 grams of fiber that means that food product really only has 5 grams of carbohydrates.  Since fiber can't be digested by your body the carbohydrates from the fiber don't count towards your calorie intake. Foods high in fiber are a great option for people on low carb diet.  If you aren't sure how to fit your daily fiber intake into your diet, try one of our customized fitness programs and find out exactly what you need to reach your fitness goals.
